The Roster Split – a resume after 1 Month

On July 19th 2016 Smackdown went live and the WWE started a roster split / draft between Smackdown and RAW. We saw, who has joined SD and RAW and also who the Commissioners and GMs are.

Yes, we expect a lot from both shows and its going well, except of a few things i dislike. Here are my Pros and Cons

Pro:

  • More talents

As every show needs its own exclusive wrestlers, we expected a lot of new talents, some from other promotions or free agents, and some from NXT. For me this was great. There are a lot of talents around the world and at NXT who deserve it to be in the WWE. People like Fin Balor (why did it took so long for him from NXT to RAW?) or Enzo and Cass who both are great in the ring and on the mic. Or the „divas“ from NXT like Alexa Bliss or Nia Jax (still no Bailey??). The first and best thing about the roster split are new talents. And RAW goes even further. RAW is starting the cruiser weight division (finally again)! I dont know how the WWE will implement the cruiserweight divison in the main show, maybe with one or two matches per night, we will see. And i also guess that they will get a title too, after 9 years! (btw the cruiser-weight classics is great to watch, isnt it 😉 )

  • More story-lines

So we have two independent shows now. And both need their own story’s. Maybe i’m one of very few but the main reason i love watching the wwe are the story lines (especially if there is a „bad guys group“ like NWO, The (Bullet) Club or even Aces&Eights (from TNA)). Without a good (main) story wrestling isnt the same for me. Its ok if we have two or three matches without a real story but the main event should always be something like „David vs Goliath“ or good vs evil. This keeps people watching the show every week, we want to know if the face wins or if the heel tricks the ref and get the illegal win 😉 Lets face it, WWE is a sports telenovela (thats not a bad thing!)

  • More PPVs

I dont know exactly when i heard about it the first time (it was daniel bryan, possibly in a pre show of smackdonw) but i was all-in after he said that smackdown needs his own PPVs now. I never thought about this before but yes, after the split there has to be exclusive PPVs simply because we get more titles and there cant be PPVs with only title matches for every show. I mean, who want to watch a (raw) tag team title match and after that another (smackdown) tag team title match aso aso. After last Tuesday we know the name of the first smackdown PPV, and its very familiar to the fans, it will be called  No Mercy“… (i hope that we dont get, in your house“ back 😉 )

On the Con side:

  • Timing of the show is awful!

Now we have „Monday Night RAW live“ and „Tuesday Smackdown live“. WTF? Why Tuesday? Why i hate this is simple. After watching smackdonn Tuesday night you have to wait the whole rest oft he week (5 Days! 5 Days).

Friday Night Smackdown was good, after watching raw we just had to wait 3 days to get the next dose of our drug called wwe and after smackdown just 2 more days to watch raw (1 on weekends with a PPV). Then Smackdown changed to Thursday which was ok too, 2 days waiting after raw and 3 days after smackdown. But now we have the full dose of wrestling at the beginning of the week and after Tuesday night there is so much time we have to wait for the next shows. Thats what i dislike the most!

  • The amateurs are back

From time to time we see a new talent getting a good build up with a few easy matches against „local amateur wrestlers“ (the guys no one knows and who always look like they never saw a performance center from the inside). The first time i saw this (and still remember) was Yokozuna destroying all the amateurs. The last time i remember was with Ryback. And i always thought that these kind of matches are just boring. Everybody knows who will win the match, the matches takes just a few minutes (sometimes just seconds) and after that we still dont know how good the wrestler really is compared to the other guys in the locker. And now we see more and more of these amateurs, e.g. Braun Strowman. We all know (thanks to bray wyatt and our own eyes) that Braun Strowman is a monster and no one wants to meet him in an dark alley. He already had some regular matches against other superstars and now he has these amateur matches? Why? I never liked these amateur matches and never will like them. I know that the wwe like to make that matches to introduce a new wrestler and to give him a push but why cant he get a push with matches against other superstars?

  • More titles

I dont know if i like it or not but we will see a lot of new titles. Every brand needs its own titles as they cant challenge each other.

RAW has the US Title, the Tag-Team Title and the Womens Title (and soon the Cruiserweight Title)

Smackdown has the Intercontinental Title and WWE Title.

This means that RAW will get the Universal Title at summerslam (I so much hope that Finn gets it 😉 ) and maybe one more title fort he mid card (like the Intercontinental Title) and Smackdown needs at least a Tag-Team title, a Womans Title (please dont name it Divas Title) and a lowcard title like the US Title.

Most of the titles will be introduced in the next weeks after Summerslam so we will see tournaments or battle royals for these titles and „theoratically“ we could see a title match in every show. Imagine you see a tagteam title match on Monday and on Tuesday… is this good or bad? I really dont know how this will work out. The WWE could make a lot of cool storys with that and I hope they will do that. What we wont see in the near future as long as the roster is split, is a smackdown vs raw match (Orton vs Lesnar will be the first and last i guess) but imho this could be the best thing they can do. You guys remember the NWO vs WCW times? Both were WCW superstars so it didnt make any logical sense but that wasnt a problem, we all knew that WCW were the good guys and NWO were the bad guys. Maybe we will see Mick Foley turn heel and raw will be the show of the bad guys and sd the show of the good guys… Who knows… But this would be cool!

All in all the roster split could be a very good thing for both, the wwe and the fans. And atm it looks good so far, there is a lot of potential in both shows and we can only hope that the wwe will give us what we want, cool

challenge each other.
