Finn Balor Delivered one hell of a match this year—he still deserves a title.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re likely well aware that #FinnBalor was defeated by glorified part timer #BrockLesnar at this year’s Royal Rumble. The two men were going at it for Lesnar’s Universal Championship, a title we seldom see and I often forget it exists because Lesnar is almost never on Monday Night RAW.
Let’s get this out of the way. Balor did an amazing job last night. He was great against Lesnar, who looked like he couldn’t keep up with Balor’s quickness and agility. Lesnar stumbled around the ring while Balor ran circles around him, and only looked strong when he finally got his hands on Balor. On top of that, Balor didn’t come out as the Demon, so anyone who’s been watching wrestling for a year probably knew he wouldn’t win the title. Unfortunately WWE’s incredibly predictable writing proved to be true.
I guess that’s where my frustration with this match lies. It was predictable. Even though I am a huge Balor fan, I know WWE would prefer him to stay as a mid card superstar. I had hope that they would give him a title in part because of All Elite Wrestling being a very viable thing (and rumor has it a few WWE superstars are eyeing up #AEW), but no such luck. Why am I bringing up AEW and Balor? Because let’s face it.
The first leader of the Bullet Club would likely fare better there. He would have more control over his character and progression, and maybe we could see him show anger every once in a while.
Balor can sell anything, but even I can’t always buy the constant positivity he’s selling. I want to see him angry and frustrated. I’d love to see a heel turn from him, where he goes against the actual authority of the WWE—the McMahon’s.
As far as Lesnar? Chances are he will be absent from every #RAW (and maybe PPV) between now and #WrestleMania, and I predict that Seth Rollins will take the title from him at this year’s show. That could open the door up for Balor again, and we all know the two can sell each other’s moves like no ones business. That dream match would probably be extremely exhilarating, and just all around fun to watch.
