WWE TLC 2018 Review/Grades
I actually enjoyed #TLC on Sunday. Almost all the matches were pretty good except for 1, but don’t worry we’ll get to that. All in all, good things happened last night, and stories progressed. I don’t have too many bad things to say about it so let’s get right into it.
I missed the pre-show which had the Cruiserweight champion Buddy Murphy defeat Cedric Alexander to retain and Elias defeat Bobby Lashley to keep his guitar, I guess? Kind of upsetting the cruiserweight match wasn’t on the main card though. Anyway, let’s move on.
R-Truth & Carmella Vs. Jinder Mahal & Alicia Fox (Mixed Match Challenge Finals)
I’m glad that got this match out of the way. It wasn’t too long and was pretty fun to watch. Not much to say about this honestly. Carmella locks in the Code of Silence to make Fox tap out. Truth reveals they are going to WWE headquarters for their vacation. Carmella didn’t look happy. Moving on.
The Bar Vs. The Usos Vs. The New Day (Smackdown Live Tag Team Championship Match)
It’s no secret Usos and New Day have great chemistry together. Add the Bar to the mix and you get a great quality match. A lot of good spots in this match. One of my tops was when Kofi jumped off the top rope onto his opponents and looked at peace doing it. This was a great way to get the crowd excited and to me the actual opener of the night. The Bar retained when Sheamus hit Woods with the Brogue kick.
Braun Strowman Vs. Baron Corbin (Tables, Ladders and Chairs Match)
This was probably the match that people were wondering about the most. If Corbin won, he would be permanent Raw GM. If Strowman won Corbin would be removed from the GM roll and Strowman gets a title shot at Royal Rumble. Heath Slater as Ref. was about to count out Braun until his music hit. He comes out with a sling so it’s obvious he can’t fight, but being it was a TLC match and no DQ he had a bunch of the Raw baby faces fight for him. I can’t remember them all besides Finn Balor and Kurt Angle, but they all hit their finishers and Braun pinned Corbin for the win. This was an okay way to get #BaronCorbin out and keep Strowman out while he is recovering so I’m not mad at it. Part of me wishes Bray Wyatt came out, but no matter the case Corbin is out.
Natalya Vs. Ruby Riot (Tables Match)
I thought this was good booking. I know people weren’t happy with bringing Jim Neidhart into the storyline, but I wasn’t really mad at it. WWE has done worse. And this match was very good. Liv Morgan took a pretty gnarly bump off the apron onto the table. Sarah Logan got slammed through another table as well. Great heel work from Ruby taking Natalya to the table with her father’s print on it saying, “He’s ashamed of you”. I thought that was an awesome line, especially in the PG era. Also, with the delivery of Natalya’s line, “You want to mess with my family, Bi*ch?!”. Really good stuff here. Natalya ends up taking a table from under the ring that has Riot’s image on it and powerbombs her through it for the victory.
Finn Balor Vs. Drew McIntyre
Good match, wrong result. No secret both these athletes are great at what they do. And we knew this was going to be a good match, but Drew should keep his momentum and not lose right now. Even though Dolph Ziggler was the reason for the loss it doesn’t help Drew at all. Then after the match Dolpha and Finn get in a bit of a scuffle, so I don’t get that at all.
Rey Mysterio Vs. Randy Orton (Chairs Match)
Only Rey and Randy can take a ridiculous match stipulation like this and make it as good as it was. Especially Randy with his timing and precision. At one-point Rey used a chair as a boogie board and slip out of the ring onto Randy on the floor. A lot of fun creative moments and the ending came when Randy set up 4 chairs and went for an RKO until Rey got out of it, spun Orton face first on the chairs, hit a hurricanrana for the pin. Really fun and energetic match for both athletes.
Ronda Rousey Vs. Nia Jax (Raw Women’s Championship Match)
Love her or hate her, Ronda’s PPV matches have all been awesome matches. And this was no different. This made up for both of the women’s lack of skills at the promos. A top spot was #RondaRousey power bombing Nia off the turnbuckle. Ronda’s reversals were pretty dope too. It’s just something she is really good at and is improving very fast. She hasn’t been in WWE for a year yet. A moment I loved is when she kissed Nia’s hand just before locking in her armbar. Really good stuff here. After the match Becky meets Nia attacks her saying “keep my name out your mouth” Awesome.
Daniel Bryan Vs. AJ Styles (WWE Championship Match)
Match of the night candidate in my opinion and Bryan’s best match since coming back from retirement. This is one of those matches I can’t tell you about. Just go watch it. Finish came when Bryan reversed a pin attempt by Styles for the win.
Seth Rollins Vs. Dean Ambrose (Intercontinental Championship Match)
I had to deal with something, so I missed the majority of this match. Judging by what people are saying it was a disappointment. Not surprising going on after the Bryan/Styles match.
Becky Lynch Vs. Asuka Vs. Charlotte Flair (Smackdown Live Women’s Championship Match)
Another match of the night candidate. All three women here looks so strong and the match was nothing short of excellent. A lot of great spots and great moments that you should just go watch it yourselves. I know some people aren’t happy with the ending, but I really liked it. Ronda interfering and taking out Becky and Charlotte builds up the storyline between them 3 and it puts the belt on Asuka. And being she didn’t win clean Becky can hold that over her head for the next time they face off in their rematch. It’s perfect.
All in all, Pretty good event by WWE. The things that should’ve ended quick ended quick. And the things that needed to take its time were played out very well.
Overall Grade: B+
