It’s Time To Reflect On AJ Styles Year Run As WWE Champion
The phenomenal one. AJ Styles. Arguably the top champion on WWE television at the moment. Showing up in WWE in 2016 and has been dominating ever since. This guy is seriously one of the greats. Now that he has the WWE Championship for a little over a year it’s time to reflect on his run as champion and what this means for WWE.
When he beat Jinder Mahal in 2017 for the belt in Manchester that was the talk of the town. And since then his reign has been nothing short of excellent. I’ve missed the days of wrestlers holding the belt for a year or so. It proves that one, the champion is definitely a fighting champ. And two the people in the suits are seriously behind them. Haven’t really gotten that in a while aside from Brock Lesnar, but I won’t get in to that mess. My biggest fear is that once #AJStyles loses the belt the reign would mean nothing. Let me explain.
Too many times I can recall #WWE putting the belt on an athlete and once it’s off them they get thrown to the back. That’s what I don’t want to happen to Styles. That and I’m afraid they will go back to bouncing the title around which would make the past year reign really mean nothing. I seriously hate when they start doing that. Which is why I like these long reigns and why I’m so invested in AJ’s reign. I actually look forward to his matches because they’re always going to be good. Whoever the next contender for the belt is, which I can’t really think of anyone, I’m excited to see how that goes.
There are some things I haven’t liked about AJ Styles though. His promos aren’t all that great. It’s always surrounded by “the house that AJ Styles built” and nothing more really. I’m not saying his deliver is bad. It’s just wayyyy to scripted. They really need to find him new things to say. I think that’s why the Samoa Joe Feud was good. It was a different feel to his words and actions. Not the typical I’m going fight you because I’m the champ and that’s what champs do, but more I’m going to fight you because I hate you and want to hurt you.
Now this guy has been a fighting champion and a real good one. To the point where the WWE title is the only title that’s important anymore. An argument can be made for the SDL women’s title, but I would like to see how Becky does with other contenders first. I’m hoping they keep it on him and put him up against a lot more competition. Him and Andrade Cien Almas would be great for a PPV. Now that Mysterio is back I’d love to see that.
I really just like long championship reigns as long as they fight for it. And so far, he has. Really, it’s been AJ Styles that’s been the face of the company all this time.
