Did WWE Evolution Live Up To The Hype?

Did WWE Evolution Live Up To The Hype?

If you didn’t watch WWE’s first all-women’s live event you missed out. #Evolution was a great show. Expectedly so because of the match card. None of the matches were bad matches. Stories progressed. Rivalries came to its breaking point. And Nostalgia was ever so present. This is my review and gradings for WWE Evolution.

Trish Stratus & Lita Vs. Mickie James & Alicia Fox:

Sure, I would’ve Preferred #AlexaBliss over Alicia Fox, but story line wise it makes sense. Alicia Fox is friends with James & Bliss so yeah, I get it. And the match was really good. Stratus and Lita definitely still got it. Mickie James kills it with her selling alone, and #AliciaFox in my opinion is one of the most underrated stars on the roster. A few mistakes were made, especially closing out the match, but overall this was a great and surprising way to open up the event.

The crowd seemed to love every moment in this match. To end the match Lita hit Fox with a Twist of Fate and Litasault on both James and Fox. Stratus follows with a Chick Kick on James. Pin 1, 2, 3 Stratus and Lita win the opening Match

Grade: B-

20 Women Battle Royal:

Not really a big fan of battle royals. It makes my head hurt. I never know what to look at, so I end up not watching until the final 4 and yeah, I didn’t really see much of this. Random Highlights: Bille Kay and Peyton Royce don’t respect their elders, pretty much all the veterans still got some moves. Random dance break with Carmella and Ivory I chuckled at that. Nia Jax and Tamina Snuka give a tribute to Roman Reigns doing his “ooooooooahhhhhhh” thing (Get well Roman). Ember Moon and Asuka had a standoff (NXT NXT).

A bunch of other things happened I either can’t remember or couldn’t catch, but the women did great. Much respect. Final 4 were Nia Jax, Ember Moon Tamina Snuka and apparently #ZelinaVega who was never Eliminated. Jax elimantes Vega paying tribute to Andre the Giant. Ember Moon tries to eliminate her. She…. Uh…. She really tries. But no Nia Jax wins the battle royal. Was really pushing for Ember moon here, but Jax is a close second.

Grade: C-

Toni Storm Vs. Io Shirai Mae Young Classic Final:

This match didn’t go as long as I wanted it to. Then I remembered good matches don’t have to be long matches. And this was a great match. No big rivalry here. No one trying to get revenge on the other. No crazy story line here. This was just a competition to see who is better. Definitely the most technical match of the night. Near fall after near fall and big move after big move. Just go watch it. In the end Toni Storm won with a second Storm Zero on Shirai. Pin fall 1, 2, 3. Toni Storm wins the Mae Young Classic

Grade: A

Sasha Banks, Natalya, Bayley Vs. The Riot Squad six women tag match:

I’ve ranted about this enough I won’t anymore. Overall a pretty decent match. Highlights from the match: Natalya teams with Banks to pay homage to her father Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart with the Hart Attack. Bayley sacrifices her body to protect Banks from a Riot Splash. Liv Morgan really improved in the ring. I was watching her thinking “This is the best I’ve seen her”. Bayley hits Riott with an elbow drop paying homage to Randy Savage. Banks hits a frog splash paying homage to her idol Eddie Guerrero. 1, 2, 3 the baby faces win.

Grade: C

Shayna Baszler Vs Kairi Sane for the NXT Women’s championship:

Such a great match these two gave. I have to start watching NXT again to see how #ShaynaBaszler is doing because she really impressed me here. And Kairi Sane we all know is great in the ring too. So, let’s talk about the ending. Of course Baszlers friends Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir were siting ring side. Sane hits a splash onto Baszler on the floor, throws her into her friends Duke and Shafir. Duke pulls Sanes hair and gets hit with a with a spinning backfist. Shafir gets hit with a spinning backfist shortly after while climbing the apron to distract Sane and prevent an elbow drop finisher. This led to a choke attempt from Baszler quickly countered by sane for a 2-count pin. Ref’s back turned, Duke lands a nice kick on sane, Baszler locks in the Kirifuda Clutch. Sane passes out and ref calls it.

New NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler. That was a lot, right? This got me thinking “4 horsewomen heel faction? Will Ronda turn heel soon because she’s in that faction”. I like when WWE gets me to think.

Grade: B+

Becky Lynch Vs. Charlotte Flair for the Smackdown Live Women’s Championship: Wow. Just Wow. Match of the night. It was brutal. It was violent. Incredible storytelling. And really a great finish. That’s all I’m going to say. You have to go watch this match. Becky wins, but you have to see how

Grade: A+

Ronda Rousey Vs. Nikki Bella for the Ray Women’s Championship:

Remember WrestleMania 25 when Shawn Michaels tried to beat Undertakers streak and it was as incredible as you can imagine? Remember saying this should’ve main evented? Remember the matches after that? Because I honestly don’t. That’s what happened here. No, this match wasn’t bad. It was actually quite good. But after THAT match. Bad decision making here. But seriously this match was good. Ronda really just gets wrestling.

How she shines is she knows how to make her opponent look strong and that’s major in this industry. In no world did we see Nikki beat Ronda, so we knew what was going to happen. And there was help from Brie too. Anyway, simple stuff here. Ronda gets the comeback victory. Ronda Retains. Question is who can beat Ronda Rousey. *Ember Moon please*.

Grade: B-

Overall Grade: B+

The PPV was great. Really if you didn’t watch it you should really take time out to watch. I personally would’ve changed a few things around. Would’ve put Becky and Charlotte last. Would’ve put Banks and Bayley against each other. Given more time to Storm and Shirai. Other thank that it was great to see the women like that yesterday.

It was fun and emotional. Hats off to all the women involved. Two favorites were Becky/Charlotte and Toni Storm/Io Shirai. Least favorite was the battle royal
