Last time I wrote about Elias was just before Elimination Chamber in February. This was at the time when #Elias felt like one of the more relevant superstars on Raw. It was about whether or not Elias was going to be a big part of WrestleMania 34. If you were able to watch either the Chamber or Mania, then you’ll know he didn’t have much of a role at all. But now with the recent announcement that he will be competing for the Intercontinental Championship at #MoneyintheBank, is Elias in the right place to be competing for this spotlight?
This isn’t any ordinary title match for Elias. This will be his first ever championship match here in WWE and it is against arguably the best wrestler in all of WWE, #SethRollins who is very much in his prime right now. Elias is a strong and very physical wrestler, but will he be able to keep up with the fast-paced, non-stop action of the King Slayer?
I am still a huge fan of Elias, and I know I’m not the only one! However, it is realistic to recognize that he hasn’t felt as special as of late. WWE creative clearly has a lot of faith in Elias as they do give him a lot of leeway with his songs and have used him for some pretty big spots, most recently being the return of Bobby Lashley.
Elias got this title match basically out of nowhere. There wasn’t much build-up at all before the match was announced for #MITB. Rollins interrupted one of Elias’s performances, so Elias naturally demolished a guitar over Seth’s back. But this is one title feud I’m ok with not having a lot of build-up. These two men are so entertaining that they could probably tell the whole story in just one match.
However, I really like what they did this past week on Monday Night Raw. In a tag team match of Jinder Mahal and Elias versus Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, they gave Elias the pinfall victory over the champ. Now yes, this does happen a lot, but for whatever reason, for me, this felt more special than a lot of the others. Probably because Rollins is one of the best in the world, and because Elias is so charismatic and everyone feels like he deserves this spot.
I think a title win for Elias would be perfect! A loss wouldn’t hurt Rollins at all simply because of how amazing he is. Plus he’s very clearly the most over superstar in WWE, so he could survive dropping the title. Elias’s character and persona will only escalate if he becomes champion.
Elias has proven that he can handle the spotlight that WWE has given him. This is going to be a fun match at Money in the Bank and at the end of the day, regardless of the winner, I’m sure I will be satisfied. However, I would be lying if I didn’t say that I really, really want Elias to win this match. He’s ready for the gold and I am ready to walk with Elias.
