Brother Nero is one of the many personas #JeffHardy took on during his days with Impact Wrestling. It was the accompanying character to #MattHardy during his ‘Broken’ days. In case you’re unaware, Brother Nero is the face-painted, more twisted version of Jeff that many WWE fans have been waiting to see on Smackdown Live. Well, Nero is finally here, but can we expect the same charismatic enigma that took over #Impact?
I have a feeling that Brother Nero is going to slowly progress into what wrestling fans remember him as. Just like Matt Hardy’s ‘Woken’ gimmick, it took WWE creative a while to let Matt truly embrace all the character has to offer on WWE TV. Nero’s awakening may be similar in that it takes several weeks for the full character to emerge.
I like that #ShinsukeNakamura is the first person Nero gets to feud with. In my Backlash predictions article a couple months ago, I picked Nakamura to be Jeff Hardy’s next opponent for the United States Championship. Hopefully the injury Shinsuke retained on Monday night isn’t a long-term thing, but if it is, they set up an interesting storyline this past week on Smackdown Live between Nero and #SAnitY.
Talk about the battle of the deranged! SAnitY would be so much fun to watch against a full-blown Brother Nero. However, I don’t think now is the right time to have this feud, as SAnitY is currently in the middle of a storyline with the Usos. But WWE creative has strategically placed the seeds that could lead to something between Hardy and SAnitY somewhere down the road.
WWE can’t half-ass the Brother Nero gimmick like they did with #WokenMattHardy for so long. They first need to change his theme song and have him do less clapping along with the crowd. As Jeff Hardy, this works just fine. But as Brother Nero, there needs to be an awakening of a much darker side of Hardy.
If they give free reign to Hardy and allow him to go all out with Brother Nero, then expect to be incredibly entertained in the upcoming months. However, I do believe it will be some time before we see the true Nero. I would love to see Hardy also bring some of his others characters into WWE like Willow, even if it’s just for a short period of time.
I’m not going to get my hopes up. I will still enjoy whatever direction they take Brother Nero (unless they totally bury him). But I won’t deny that there are definitely directions I would prefer them to go. At the end of the day, I’m just a huge wrestling mark and am very happy to see Vince allowing the Hardys to channel what got them so over the past few years. In my opinion, #BrotherNero is here, and he’s here to stay!
