As strange as this question might seem – love can never be explained or rationalized -, I find it really critical and unavoidable to try to answer this question. No old-school; die-hard wrestling fan wasn’t faced with objections such as:
It’s acting, It’s not real, They know who’s going to win!
Another type of criticism that we – wrestling lovers – have to deal with is the kind of:
What’s so appealing in watching people knocking each other out? Those people are crazy, and why do you spend your time watching fake sports?
Well, with all due respect to what everybody thinks, our love to wrestling is neither caused by nor would be affected by these observations. Simply because that’s not what we see in wrestling. Not the kicks, not the blood, and we never claimed that wrestlers really intend to harm one another.
First of all, the memories!! A memory of he first time we watched the squared circle on TV or attended a life action. Who was there with us, what was the match, how the attendance or the crowd reacted. Wrestling is deeply connected with our earliest memories. Happy, passionate and exciting memories.
Second comes the identification with a superstar. Whether it was Hull Hogan or John Cena, it doesn’t matter. Every real wrestling fan has a preferred wrestler, someone they followed for a long time. Someone they celebrated with, cried for and felt the enthusiasm once their music ever came to play.
Third is the moments. A real wrestling fan knows well that a “WrestleMania Moment” is so clishe and over-hyped. A true wrestling citezin has a lot of brilliance-oozing, heart-breaking and everlasting moments that bring them goosebumps everytime they watch on YouTube or WWE Network. Either it was a win, an injury or even a hug.
Comes number four: the promos. Not a wrestling fan doesn’t memorize by heart tens of promos and vocal fights between the greats of the business. For a real fan, they were declarations of war, breaking news and expressions of dominance.
Last, but not least, are the stories. The feuds. How they evolve and evolve, untill the moment of truth arrives, and the inevitable comes to life. For a wrestling fan, a match is never just “a match”. It’s a battle in s long ugly war between gladiators; warriors; patriots, fighting for their territories.
Dear friends who have always wondered why I’ve been a fan all those years I hope you know by now what wrestling means to me.
Dear friends who share me the love and passion for wrestling, please feel free to share your bonds with our beloved other meaning of life.
