When WWE bought out WCW, they got a pool of roster talent, video collections, and just about everything involving WCW, including championship belts.
The United States Title is a old title that dates back to 1975 when Harley Race won the title with Jim Crockett Promotions’ Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling.
The United States Championship has been owned by WWE since 2001. It became known as the WWE Untied States Championship since 2003, (known as WCW United States Championship in 2001 WWE programming) and has been a secondary, mid-card title for the roster. I’ve always been fascinated with the title, the shaped colors of America, still able to put your name on the title to claim it yours, plus I’m a U S of A patriotic guy, but the title has lost is luster.
The title has not been held for more than 100 days since Roman Reigns did it, winning the title on September 25, 2016. He lost the title to Chris Jericho on January 9th, 2017, ending his reign at 106 days. Since than, the title has switched superstars a total of 13 times not including a vacancy. 3 times alone in 2018. Compare that to the old days when the title was used to be a primary title, it wasn’t uncommon for wrestlers to hold the title over 100 days, 200 days or a few over 300 days.
The title has rich history around it, but is it truly a “stepping stone” for stars to hold as it can show the company is giving them a push? Not any more. It’s really become a title to fill time. Smackdown! Live has really held the title for its majority time in WWE’s brand splits.
With all the times the title has changed hands within WWE programming as of late, WWE is not only making the title worthless, but also pointless for the superstars to want to chase, and the fans not giving a damn about the title. Seems every time they have a title match, a new champion is crowned.
The Intercontinental Championship is being held on a regular basis now but mainly by the Miz. If WWE can do that with the United States Championship more often, it can gain its respect back. Give the title to a newer performer and have them hold it for 6 months or longer. Rrepeat the process with the next guy. The first shouldn’t be Jeff Hardy. He’s a accomplished star in and itself.
I think someone like Andrade “Cien” Almas could benefit from the title or someone like Killian Dian could also have a good push. He was a failed NXT singles competitor, but having him hold the US Championship and Eric Young and Wolff getting the Tag Team Championships, could really set Sanity apart from the rest of the roster. Kinda like the Evolution days.
Hopefully WWE gets their act together when it comes to the second oldest title in the company. Many WWE Hall of Famers have held the title. It’s been in great story-lines, but now it’s just… there. No point to the title being a priority anymore.
