I hope I don’t lose any wrestling street cred with what I’m going to write about today. Of course, based on the title, we’re going to talk about everyone’s favourite Big Dog, Roman Reigns. Reigns has taken over John Cena’s spot in recent years as the most polarizing figure in WWE.
He’s been at the forefront of a massive push by Vince McMahon, but no matter what he does, fans continue to relentlessly boo him. After recent weeks of elevated promos, could Reigns be making a turn for the best?
I was once one of the many that would constantly boo Roman and hate on matches that he won. But I told myself that, since this year is the Chinese New Year of the Dog, I was going to try and become as big of a big dog fan as I could. What started as a joke though has piece by piece become me actually turning into a fan of Reigns.
His shoot promo on Brock Lesnar a couple weeks ago was on
e of, if not the best promo of his career. The thing that Reigns is doing differently than anyone else on the mic, maybe other than Paul Heyman, is bringing a serious edginess and non-PG vibe.
Far gone are the days of “Suffering Succotash” and in comes a new and improved Roman Reigns. If you haven’t seen his promo from a couple weeks ago, I seriously recommend you check it out. Even the brief war of words that Reigns and Heyman had this past week on Raw felt like something WWE fans have been longing for since the days of the Ruthless Aggression era.
Sure Reigns may not be the most technically sound wrestler in the world, but when he’s matched up against the right opponent, he can put on an incredibly entertaining, physical match. Just revisit the first encounter between Lesnar and Reigns at WrestleMania 31. That match was so much fun to watch, even before Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase.
All the pieces are there for Reigns to become a true WWE star. At the end of the day, it all comes down to bad booking, like the majority of things. Sure we’d like to see some of our favorite superstars go over every once and a while, I get that!
I just believe that Roman is being hated on simply for the sake of being hated on.
Now I am not telling anyone to become a Roman Reigns fan, as I understand the incredible backlash that may cause. I’m just presenting the possibility that he may not be as bad as we all think he is. His promos are getting way better, his matches have a lot of potential, and I believe that he’ll put on one hell of a match against Lesnar in his fourth WrestleMania main event in a row! If you won’t budge at all on these arguments, then my words of comfort for you are that Reigns won’t be champ forever. BELIEVE THAT!
