The Mixed Match Challenge was a super fun idea when it was first announced. It was truly something that we had not seen before and integrated superstars in a fresh and unexpected way. It set up so many fun tag team pairings such as Braun Strowman and Alexa Bliss, or Rusev and Lana. But as more and more rounds take place, the more and more people are realizing that this tournament could be hurting our favourite superstars more than helping them.
Let’s get one thing straight; the Mixed Match Challenge is best for business. Although Facebook Watch may not have been the best platform to use seeing that I can’t watch it because I live in Canada, it’s still a great way to draw fans in with something new. But recently, it’s come to some people’s attention that there could be a problem with putting so many recognizable names who are or should be in the middle of a push.
Bayley, for example, losing to Lana in the most lack luster way possible doesn’t make sense, unless Vince is letting the WWE Universe know that Bayley is done getting any sort of push. Sami Zayn being on a losing team while he’s in the middle of a WWE Championship feud lets me as a fan know that there are no intentions of putting the belt around his waist. At least he wasn’t pinned in the match, so it wasn’t a total burial.
WWE has also painted themselves into a corner with having Asuka in the tournament. Either she’s clearly going to be victorious or they’re going to end her undefeated streak for no reason. This addition is the one that makes the least sense if you’re aiming to make the tournament anything but predictable. And if the plan is to have Asuka or the Miz lose any of their matches, then you’ve just wasted the biggest streak break since the Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak.
It makes sense that WWE wanted a majority of their top guys and gals in this tournament so that people actually watch. But I also believe that there could have been way better planning as to not make superstars that the WWE Universe cares about look weak as hell. Bayley was the worst of all! She lost off the weakest reversal on the planet that we see in nearly every match. I just feel bad for her. Although, at the end of the day, it was pretty ravishing that Lana won her first match on Rusev Day… what are the odds?!?
I don’t want it to sound like I hate the Mixed Match Challenge because I don’t. I simply believe that it’s hurting some superstars more than it’s helping others. But one thing we can all agree on is that Bliss and Strowman are magical together!
