Ever since it’s creation back in the summer of 2016, the WWE Cruiserweight division has been the bane of much of the WWE Universe’s fandom. With plenty of poor booking, weak storylines, and dud characters, fans didn’t really have anything worth cheering for other than cool flips and tricks. However, recently we’ve seen a resurgence for the cruiserweights, which in my opinion, garners some well-earned love.
With what started off as a division of almost entirely new faces, the additions of larger attractions such as Enzo Amore and recently debuting Hideo Itami, add the sort of popularity the cruiserweights so desperately need. Neville was the first name to spark my interest in the division, and following that up with Austin Aries, it seemed like 205 Live was going to be a frequent part of my week. Now that those two are both gone, my interest has started to dwindle. But that isn’t to say that I don’t care at all.
If you want to look past the idea of adding popular superstars into the mix for attention, then that’s also completely fine. In recent weeks on Monday Night Raw, the cruiserweights have seriously stepped up their game, putting on legitimately entertaining matches, a few of which received “This is awesome” chants from the crowd. Most of the people I talk to about wrestling aren’t ever witnesses to these great matches because they see the purple ropes and immediately tune out. This should not be what we do. These are some of the most athletically gifted superstars in the WWE and they deserve so much more.
On top of the quality of wrestling seemingly increasing with each match that’s put on, many of the superstars in the cruiserweight division seem to be coming into their own. Gone are the days of Alicia Fox screaming at Noam Dar over FaceTime on his way to the ring, which is honestly my least favourite moment in all of the 10 years I’ve been watching the WWE.
Wrestlers like Drew Gulak, Tony Nese, Mustafa Ali, all guys I never thought I would care about are starting to creep onto my radar. We need to continue to give these guys a chance because they fully have what it takes. They and the division they represent just need a proper push. Let’s spread holiday cheer this season by not looking negatively on the cruiserweights any longer. They have so much potential and truly, are awesome!
